Plain Soft Rice Mash for Babies

This simple rice mash starts with fully cooked soft rice and a little water. It is a basic texture option, not a complete meal; vary grains and include age-appropriate iron-rich foods across the day.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup (about 45g) fully cooked soft rice
  • 2–3 tbsp safe water, plus more if needed

Preparation

  1. Use freshly cooked rice that is completely tender, or cooked rice that was cooled promptly and refrigerated safely. If cooking dry rice from scratch, follow the package directions and allow the full cooking time.

  2. Mix rice with safe water and blend or mash thoroughly until moist and spoonable, breaking up any sticky or compact lumps. Add liquid little by little to avoid making it watery.

  3. Serve promptly at an appropriate temperature. If keeping untouched portions, follow the strict cooked-rice cooling, refrigeration and single-reheating guidance.

Serving by Age

Offer smooth soft rice on a spoon, avoiding dense sticky clumps. Rice mash is not a protein food or an iron-rich meal on its own; pair or alternate it with a variety of suitable vegetables, proteins and iron-rich foods.

6 months+

Blend rice until fully smooth, loose and spoonable.

9 months+

Offer a moist soft mash with individual tender grains only when texture skills allow.

Allergen Information

Plain rice and water have no intentionally added common major allergens; check any commercially prepared rice and optional additions.

Storage

Cool within 1 hour and refrigerate or freeze promptly. If refrigerated, use within 24 hours because the recipe contains cooked rice. Reheat only once until steaming hot throughout, then cool before serving.
