Carrot & Potato Mash for Babies

Carrot and potato make a naturally sweet, gently textured mash. Cut both into similarly sized pieces and cook until each crushes easily rather than assuming one steaming duration fits all.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium carrot, peeled and diced
  • 1 small potato, peeled and diced
  • Safe water or unsalted cooking liquid as needed

Preparation

  1. Wash, peel and dice the carrot and potato into small, evenly sized pieces. Start the firmer pieces first when necessary.

  2. Steam or simmer until the thickest carrot and potato pieces crush completely under a fork; extend the cooking time if either remains firm.

  3. Mash or blend thoroughly with a little safe cooking liquid until moist and spoonable, with no hard carrot or potato pieces. Cool before serving.

Serving by Age

Offer a fully smooth moist mash for early spoon feeding or a thick, completely soft texture when your baby manages lumps. Serve with varied foods rather than as a complete meal on its own.

6 months+

Smooth moist blend with no firm carrot or potato.

9 months+

Soft thicker mash only after both vegetables are fully tender.

Allergen Information

Plain carrot, potato and water do not intentionally contain common major allergens; check any optional additions separately.

Storage

Cool untouched cooked mash promptly and refrigerate covered; use within 2 days. Reheat thoroughly, stir well and cool before serving; discard bowl leftovers.
