Carrot + Zucchini Mash for Babies

Carrot and zucchini need different cooking times. Start with carrot, add zucchini later, and judge readiness by how easily both crush with a fork.

Ingredients

  • 1 carrot, washed and peeled
  • 1/2 zucchini, washed and trimmed
  • Safe water or unsalted cooking liquid, as needed

Preparation

  1. Peel the carrot, trim the zucchini and chop both into small even pieces. Remove unusually tough zucchini peel if present.

  2. Steam or simmer the carrot first, since it takes longer to soften than zucchini.

  3. Add the zucchini once the carrot begins to soften. Cook until both vegetables crush easily with a fork, checking the thickest carrot pieces.

  4. Mash or blend with a little safe water or unsalted cooking liquid until moist and spoonable, without firm carrot pieces or tough zucchini skin.

  5. Cool to feeding temperature and check the consistency before serving.

Serving by Age

For early spoon feeding, offer a smooth purée that is not runny. Progress to a thicker soft mash according to your baby's texture skills; this vegetable side is not a complete iron-containing meal by itself.

6 months+

Smooth, moist carrot-zucchini purée without hard pieces.

9 months+

Soft, completely tender mash with small manageable lumps.
