Mini Shepherd's Pie Bites for Babies (9 months+)

This small shepherd's-pie-style bake combines thoroughly cooked minced beef, soft carrot and smooth mashed potato. The topping may not hold together as neat bites; a moist spoonable portion is preferable to baking the mixture dry.

Ingredients

Preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Cook finely diced carrot in a covered pan with a splash of water until fully soft.

  2. Add the minced beef and cook thoroughly, breaking it into small pieces, until no pink remains and the thickest part reaches 71°C (160°F) on a food thermometer. Add a little water as needed to keep the mixture moist.

  3. Spread beef and carrot in a small oven-safe dish and top with smooth mashed potato. Bake until hot through without forming a hard crust. Cool, then serve as soft portions rather than assuming clean squares will form.

Serving by Age

Break up any minced-beef clumps and ensure carrot is completely tender. Offer soft spoonable portions or gently formed pieces only if they hold together without a firm crust. Check that food is not too hot.

9 months+

Offer soft moist spoonable portions, or manageable pieces if the bake holds together.

Allergen Information

The listed ingredients contain no intentionally added major allergens, but check mashed potato for milk or butter if using a prepared version.

Storage

Cool promptly, refrigerate covered, and reheat until steaming hot throughout; let cool before serving. Discard food from baby's plate.
