Ingredients

  • 40g lean minced beef
  • 1/2 cup peeled, deseeded pumpkin cubes
  • 2 tbsp fully cooked pearl barley
  • 1 tsp olive oil

Preparation

  1. Use pearl barley already cooked according to the packet until completely tender; measure 2 tablespoons after cooking. Cooking barley from dry is a separate task and is not included in the conditional cook time.

  2. Remove pumpkin rind, seeds and fibrous strings. Steam the even cubes until they crush with a fork.

  3. Cook raw minced beef separately until it reaches 71°C (160°F) in the thickest part, breaking apart clumps and using a food thermometer.

  4. Mash or blend tender beef, pumpkin and cooked barley with enough safe liquid to keep the bowl moist and spoonable. Stir in olive oil and allow to cool.

Serving by Age

Offer a smooth or soft mash with no firm barley grains or dense minced-beef clumps. This is a spoon-fed bowl, not a finger-food recipe.

8 months+

This recipe is listed for 8–12 months, so the 6m+ field does not recommend serving it earlier. Within the listed age range and when your baby can manage the texture, serve fully blended until smooth, with no firm barley grains.

9 months+

Soft spoonable mash with fully tender barley grains, finely broken-up cooked beef and mashed pumpkin.
