Beef, Pumpkin & Barley Mash for Babies

Beef, pumpkin and barley need careful preparation before blending: barley must be fully tender, the beef cut must be identified and safely cooked, and pumpkin must be soft. The grain measurement and total cooking time remain unverified pending kitchen testing.

Ingredients

  • 50g raw lean minced beef
  • 1/2 cup (75g) peeled, deseeded pumpkin flesh, diced
  • 2 tbsp fully cooked soft pearl barley (measure after cooking; contains gluten)
  • Safe water or unsalted cooking liquid, as needed for blending

Preparation

  1. Use fully cooked soft pearl barley, measured after cooking. If you have dry barley, cook it separately following the packet until no grains remain firm; that preparation time is additional.

  2. Steam peeled, deseeded and diced pumpkin until the thickest cube crushes easily under a fork; remove hard rind and all seeds and strings.

  3. Cook the raw minced beef in a separate pan, breaking up clumps and checking its centre reaches 71°C (160°F) with a food thermometer.

  4. Blend cooked beef, completely tender pumpkin and soft barley with safe liquid until moist and spoonable. Check for chewy meat fibres or hard barley grains and cool before serving.

Serving by Age

Remove pumpkin rind and seeds, cook barley until no chewy grains remain, and blend tender safely cooked beef without tough strands. Add enough safe liquid for a moist spoonable consistency.
